Brain-teaser - May 2001

Ali and Achmed were two camel-drivers. They were tired of camels and wanted to become shepherds. So the next day they went to the market and sold all their camels. The number of silver coins they received for each camel was equal to the number of camels they sold. With the proceeds of the sale they bought as many sheep as possible at ten silver coins each. The money left over was just enough to buy a goat, so they bought a goat as well. On their way home they fell out with each other and decided to go their separate ways. There was an odd number of sheep so Ali suggested that he should take one more sheep than Achmed and that Achmed should take the goat. But Achmed would not agree to that because a sheep cost more than a goat. In the end Ali suggested that he would give Achmed one of his dogs as well and that would make things even. Achmed agreed. What was the cost of a dog?
