Brain-teaser - December 2000

A control panel has three switches. Each switch operates one light bulb in another part of the house, which is up three flights of stairs. You cannot see the light from any of the bulbs from the control panel's location. When you arrive, all three switches are in the "Off" position. You can operate any of the switches.

How can you determine which switch operates which light by only climbing the stairs once?
